Why Creative Compass?

Because it’s lonely to try to be everything for ourselves: in our careers, and in our human relationships. Humane, focused companionship and accompaniment, specifically in our creative work and practice, is an essential service.

We live in a liminal time for concepts of work, economy, and creativity.

The “traditional” ways most of us were raised to work, and to talk about work, don’t meet our needs as creatives, and don’t meet the realities of our world.

For example: If you work for an organization, you have built-in help structuring your time and channeling your energy.

  • Goals, a manager, and performance reviews help you understand whether your work is effective, and how to improve.
  • Work hours, team meetings, and timelines help define your schedule.
  • “Company culture” norms and tools help direct the flow of communication.
  • Access to colleagues gives you helpers you can tap for focused conversations about projects, blockers, ideas.
  • An office, or a dedicated laptop and mobile phone, can help cue your body toward work versus rest.

I’m not saying all that stuff is necessary, or necessarily good. It’s a set of tools, and those tools do a lot of work structuring what you do and why you do it. When, by contrast, you’re doing independent creative work, you have to figure out everything for yourself.

  • Your motivations
  • Your priorities
  • Your workflow
  • Your communications
  • How to stay focused
  • How and when to level up

This is where Creative Compass can help.
